Appiah backs Nyantakyi to stay on as GFA president

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has thrown his weight behind Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss Kwesi Nyantakyi, who is seeking for re-election in August.

Under Nyantakyi’s watch the Black Stars have been to three World Cups – Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.

Football pundits around the world have described the lawyer, popularly known as ‘Wa Polo’ among his peers, as one of the most successful football administrators in the history of Ghana football.

Speaking on Starr Chat on Starr 103.5FM with host Bola Ray, Wednesday, Appiah said Nyantakyi’s records are obvious and he will support him.

“I think the man [Nyantakyi] is doing very well and under him as president of the GFA, he has led the team [Black Stars] three times to the World Cup so what do we want more. If he is going to be the president some of us will support him,” the former Juventus midfielder said.

The ‘Tornado’ served notice he has no plans to contest for the Ghana FA presidency now, but added: “If the time comes and everything is right, why not.”

Nyantakyi assumed the role of Ghana FA boss in 2005 and is also the head of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU).
