Appiah becomes 41st coach of the Black Stars

Kwesi Appiah becomes the 41st coach to handle Ghana’s senior men’s team, the Black Stars since 1958.

The list of coaches who have handled the team includes permanent and stop-gap appointees by the Ghana Football Association.

Appiah stepped up to head coach of the team from his assistant role and is the ninth Ghanaian national to take charge of the Black Stars.

"It's a pleasure to serve the nation and everyone will feel proud to serve their motherland," Appiah says.

"I want to thank the Government of Ghana, the GFA President, Executive Committee, the media and the entire people of Ghana for having trust and confidence in me."

C.K. Gyamfi was the first Ghanaian to take charge of the team in 1963 with Fred Osam Duodu, E.K. Afranie, Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, E.J. Aggrey-Fynn, Sam Arday, Herbert Addo and Sellas Tetteh all having been entrusted with the job in the past.

Kwesi Appiah was an assistant coach of the Black Stars from 2008 and led the Ghana’s U-23 team to an historic gold medal at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
