Appiah's First Time

Sat, 25 Nov 2000 Source: Parma website

Stephan Appiah is celebrating a long awaited goal. His thunderous strike against 1860 Munich, after only two minutes, left German goalkeeper Jentszch with no chance. The Ghanaian described his goal vividly for us: "Junior crossed and a Munich defender made a mistake. The ball landed at my feet and I didn't need to think twice. I just let go with a right foot shot. It was a good strike...."

So you believed in yourself and ended up scoring a truly great goal?
"I'm happy because I've been waiting a long time for this moment, but the goal has left a bitter taste in the mouth... a win would have definitely been better. Although it must be said that it was a lovely goal as I hit it with real power. And with all the fog that was about it was even more memorable."

You said that the UEFA Cup result didn't satisfy you. In your opinion what was missing?
"The win and a bit more concentration in the second half. Playing without strikers though it was hard to avoid not giving our opponents some space. In the second half they pressed forward but if we had had someone experienced up front I believe we would have done well on the break."

Among the Munich 1860 players who impressed you the most?
"Without doubt [Thomas] Haessler. He was truly excellent. He was a player I had heard great things about and let's just say he didn't disappoint. He pulls the strings for the German’s whole array of attacking play."

How do you feel about your future?
"At Parma there are so many great players and I know it will be very difficult to get a regular place. All I know is that I'm giving my all and that physically I am in good shape. I have a duty to try as hard as I can whenever Malesani picks me to play."

Next up is Lazio. How do you see it going?
"It will be a very tough match for us as we will be without a number of players. I know that Amoroso could be back in the team but we'll once again be short, which will leave fewer options open to Malesani. Whoever plays will give their all."
