Armed Forces Sports Festival opens in Accra

Accra, Aug. 14, GNA - The Ghana Armed Forces Inter Service Sports Festival opened in Accra on Monday with a call on the participants to adhere to the principles of fair play.

They should also strive to promote friendship and co-operation among themselves.

Major-General Samuel Odotei, Chief of the Army Staff who made the call said the Festival provides the platform for interaction among personnel to keep always fit to discharge their duties diligently and professionally.

Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force are competing in Soccer, Volleyball, Handball, Basketball and Table Tennis, Hockey, Tug-of-War, Athletics and Boxing.

Maj. Gen. Odotie said the 12 96 day Festival is also aimed at selecting players to represent the Army in this year's Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games and enhancing spirit-de-corps among the troops.

He recalled with pride that the Armed Forces has produced some great personalities to represent the country in international sports. Maj. Gen. Odotei said it is hope that the festival would bring more honours to the nation and that the Games will enhance the physical fitness of the participants in line with the physical training objectives of the Armed Forces. The Chief of Army Staff expressed the hope that more talents will be unearthed at the end of the Festival to bring more honours to the nation and the Forces. Maj. Gen. Odotei urged the officials to abide by their oath to officiate at the competition in a fair and professional manner. In the opening game of Women's Tug-of-War, Air-Force defeated Navy 2-1. 14 Aug. 06
