Striker Asamoah Gyan failed to recover for Shanghai SIPG’s first Asian Champions League victory on Wednesday.

The Ghana captain was substituted last Wednesday in the 2-1 defeat at Melbourne Victory due to the thigh strain and could not recover in time.

Shanghai SIPG coach Sven Goran Eriksson was hoping his lethal weapon was going to pass a late fitness for the crucial clash.

In his absence, goals from Elkeson and Wu Lei secured a 2-1 win over Korea Republic’s Suwon Samsung Bluewings in Group G.

Former Guangzhou Evergrande forward Elkeson netted his 15th AFC Champions League goal, and first in Shanghai SIPG colours, on 32 minutes before China midfielder Wu made it 2-0 with his second of the competition in the 51st minute.

Jang Hyun-soo 71st minute reply for two-time Asian Club Championship winners Suwon did, though, ensure a nervy finish for Sven Goran Eriksson’s men and the crowd at Shanghai Stadium.
