Asante Kotoko players are reportedly set to receive GH¢2,000 each as a reward for beating Accra Hearts of Oak to win the inaugural Democracy Cup on Wednesday, July 18, 2024.
According to Akoma FM, the players were promised initially GH¢1,000 as a winning bonus but they will receive double the amount on account of beating their arch-rivals three times in a row.
The Porcupine Warriors secured a 2-1 victory over their arch-rivals at the Accra Sports Stadium to claim the trophy.
Asante Kotoko took the lead with a penalty converted by Justice Blay in the first 30 minutes of the game.
They maintained their advantage until halftime, heading into the dressing room with the lead.
Hearts of Oak managed to equalise early in the second half when the new signing, Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, was connected with a cross from the right.
However, Asante Kotoko regained their lead on the hour mark when Peter Aminu scored with a fantastic near-post finish after Hearts of Oak lost possession in their own area.
Despite a valiant effort from Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko held on to secure the 2-1 victory.
As part of the winner's package, Asante Kotoko will face Major League Soccer side DC United in a friendly game in the US.
