Asante Kotoko reach VODACOM final

Ghana's Kumasi Asante Kotoko reached the VODACOM African Challenge Cup final after beating South Africa's Orlando Pirates 4-2 on penalties. The penalty shoot out came after a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes. Pirates took the lead in the second half through Benedict Vilakazi but just as everyone was expecting a Sowetan victory in Durban, Asante Kotoko equalised through their striker Joe Louis, who connected with a cross from fellow strike partner Shilla Alhassan.

It was then onto penalties, and Pirates converted their first two spot kicks but then missed the next two, while Kotoko scored four penalties in a row to clinch the win.

In the first game of the day, another Ghanaian side, Accra Hearts of Oak, were defeated 2-0 by Kaiser Chiefs.

Asante Kotoko will, therefore, play Kaiser Chiefs in the final on July 8 in Durban. The tournament has been dubbed "the healing process" following the stadium disasters that claimed lives in both Ghana and South Africa earlier this year.

Hearts will play Orlando Pirates in the third place play-off on the same day.
