Offinso (Ash), Jan 5, GNA - Mr Joseph Yaw Oduro, the Offinso District Chief Executive has advised teachers to effectively identify and develop the strength, abilities, skills and potentials of the youth to enable them contribute meaningfully towards national development. He said the correct and systematic development of the skills of the youth in the field of physical culture was vital for the harnessing of the country's human resources for accelerated development. Mr Oduro said this at the opening of the 11th Ashanti Regional Basic Schools Inter-District Under-12 soccer festival at Offinso on Tuesday.

The newly created Districts are however not taking part in this year's weeklong festival.

The District Chief Executive pointed out that sports was an integral part of the general educational development process of the child, adding that besides impacting positively on the community and the national economy, it also helps to maximise productivity.

Mr Oduro cautioned the youth against the HIV/AIDS menace and advised them to protect themselves against acquiring the disease by refraining from casual sex.

Mrs Christiana Agyare Boateng, the Offinso District Director of Education said indiscipline among the youth could be adequately curbed through the promotion of sports.

She said since sports created friendship, instilled discipline, moral values and promoted physical development of the youth there was the need for the youth to be encouraged to take sporting activities seriously.

In the opening game, the host District, Offinso beat Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District 3-2 while Atwima District earlier beat the Kumasi Metropolis by a lone goal with Kwabre District also beating Sekyere East District 2-1.
