Athletes For Africa Championships in Tunisia

Ghana after the dismal performance at the on-going 17th commonwealth games in Manchester is expected to salvage image during the up-coming annual Africa Seniors Championships in Athletics in Tunis from August 6th – 10th August 2002.

It is evident that the fortune of athletics is in a dwindling state as was shown in Manchester when athletics of all sport could get Ghana just a bronze. It is in this light that athletes who will be paraded during the 4 day- championship in Tunis would have to fight to lift high the flag of Ghana and athletics from the dwindling fortunes to it’s glorious old days.

In the absence of the current African Champion Leo Myle Mills, world No. 5. Aziz Zakari is expected to lead the Ghanaian contingent commonwealth Bronze medallist Magaret Simpson, Andrews Owusu and Aziz Zakari will join the team from Manchester.

Harry Adu-Mfum, Akosua Serwaa and Gifty Addy (all medal winners at the last games) will join the team from Germany. The home based team is made up of Abu Duah, Vida Bruce Aisha Pumamang, Georgina Fowah and Vincent Asumang who will be competing in walking. Coach E. A. Wilson will lead the team to complete in sprints, long distance and jumps.

It is the wish of Ghanaians for the team to live up to expectation so as to save Ghana from disgrace in the sport of athletics.
