Former Ghana striker Augustine Arhinful believes Asamoah Gyan could still play a role in coach Kwesi Appiah's new-look Black Stars team.

Gyan, 31, involvement with the Black Stars has been limited recently due to recurring injury, which culminated in his no-show in the side's final three games in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The former Rennes forward is Ghana’s all-time record goalscorer with 51 goals to his credit, but due to the niggling injuries, many aficionados believe it's for him to call time on his Black star's career to prolong his footballing career.

But according to Arhinful, Gyan's experience at the top level means he cannot be easily dispatched and replaced with an inexperienced player all in the name of rebuilding the national team.

“I think Gyan is still important to this new-look Black Stars. His experience alone is crucial to help these young players. Yes, at his age and with the injuries, he may have to accept that he will not be starting games but just having him on the team is important. After all, not every player who is invited to the Black Stars gets to play in a game so even if he doesn’t play or play few minutes, it will be good,” Arhinful said on Kwese Sports.
