Kumasi, June 22, GNA - Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife of Nigeria played a highly determined game to beat the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) 2-1 in the semi-finals of the hockey competition on Wednesday at the on-going West African Universities Hockey and Soccer tournament at the Paa Joe Stadium at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
OAU will therefore meet University of Cape Coast (UCC) who also beat the host University, KNUST 2-1 in the grand finals on Friday. KNUST and UEW will therefore clash to determine the winner of the third position.
In the women's hockey, UCC drew 0-0 with UEW in the preliminary stage and lost 1-2 to University of Ghana (UG), Legon. In soccer competition, UG and University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Nigeria who qualified for the quarterfinals in Group 'A', will play Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) and KNUST the two qualifiers from Group 'C'.
AAU's qualification was made possible after Kano University of Technology (KUTECH) failed to turn up for their final group match. KUTECH who lost their first two matches had seven of their players declared unfit for the match following injuries they sustained and therefore had no option than to refuse to play the last group match. 22 June 05
