...Powell breaks world record
Jamaica's Asafa Powell has set a new 100m world record.

The world ranked number one sprinter recorded a time of 9.77 seconds at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

The 22-year-old's mark beats the old time of 9.78 secs, set by Tim Montgomery in Paris in September 2002.

After his momentous run, the sprinter said: "I feel great. I knew I could do it.

"I came out running my best and I broke the world record."

Powell, who failed to live up to his reputation in the Athens Olympics last year finishing fifth in the final, steamed off from the blocks.

He finished metres ahead of his closest rival, Ghana's Aziz Zakari who set a personal best of 9.99 secs.

Powell's record was witnessed by only a handful of spectators in the stadium.

It was on the same track where American Maurice Greene set a new world record of 9.79 secs in June 1999.
