Accra, Sept 12, GNA - A new awards scheme to be known as "The Great Achievers Awards" will be launched at the International Press Centre in Accra on Thursday, September 30, to honour 25 personalities, including some living sports legends like Azuma Nelson, Abedi Ayew Pele and George Oppon Weah.
Speaking to the GNA Sports on Friday, Mr Elliot Adom, Managing Director of Raddom Advertising Company, said the Awards Night, which will be held at the banquet hall of the State House, is meant to reward outstanding personalities irrespective of their profession, so long as they have distinguished themselves over the years.
He said the award, which will be in a form of dinner dance is to be organized in conjunction with a South African Media Company. Part of the proceeds will be given to the Korle-Bu Maternity Block to help mothers who are unable to pay their medical bills after delivery.
The award is to dissuade the youth from believing that it is only politics that could make them successful; but help them to take a cue from the award winners-to-be to reshape their dreams.
"The whole country is divided along political lines and the perception is that one can only be successful through politics: but we want to encourage the youth to take inspiration from legends like Azuma and Abedi who have really distinguished themselves in their respective fields", he said.
Touching on track and field, the Managing Director decried the poor states of athletics in the country, saying that there are enormous benefits to be derived from the discipline if properly managed. "Lots of Ghanaian athletes can make it at the world stage and uplift the image of the country if they are given the necessary help", he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Adom said 400 supporters of defending League Champions Accra Hearts of Oak have been registered and given identification cards at the club's on-going nation-wide registration exercise.
He said although the exercise has been slow, it has however, revived most of the club's chapters. Hearts is targeting two million of its fans through the exercise to fetch 15 billion cedis.
