02.06.04 - For 2004 Hall of Fame boxers Azumah Nelson, Carlos Palomino, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, and Daniel Zaragoza, their day in the sun is rapidly approaching. On Sunday, June 13th they will join boxing?s immortals when they are officially inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
?The Hall of Fame is eagerly anticipating welcoming these great champions to Canastota,? said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy ?Their many achievements will be remembered forever at the Hall of Fame.?
Ghana?s Nelson was the WBC featherweight champion (1984-87) and WBC super featherweight champion (1988-94, 1995-97), Palomino was welterweight champion from 1976-1979, Qawi was the light heavyweight king (1981-83) and cruiserweight champion (1985-86) and Mexico?s Daniel Zaragoza is a 3-time super bantamweight king (1988-90, 1991-92, 1995-97).
Joining the four boxers as living inductees to be honored at the Official Induction Ceremony are South African referee Stanley Christodoulou, promoter J Russell Peltz, and journalist W.C. Heinz. Posthumous inductees will also be honored at the ceremony.
Over 20 exciting events, including a golf tournament, banquet, professional boxing show, parade and autograph card show are planned. Each living inductee will receive a Hall of Fame Induction Certificate and gold Hall of Fame ring. Also, a plaque with their biography and photo will be on permanent display on the Hall of Fame Wall. The Official Enshrinement Ceremony will be held on the Hall of Fame Museum Grounds in Canastota, New York on Sunday, June 13th at 2:30 p.m.
Over 50 boxing stars, including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Jake LaMotta, Emile Griffith, Ken Buchanan, Ken Norton, George Chuvalo, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Tony DeMarco, Micky Ward, Tommy Morrison and Danny ?Little Red? Lopez are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
