BA Zone 'C' inter-co ends in confusion

Dormaa Ahenkro (B/A), March 3, GNA - This year's Brong Ahafo Inter Schools Zone 'C' Sports and Games involving 15 second cycle schools drawn from Dormaa, Jaman and Berekum districts came to an abrupt end at Dormaa Ahenkro, due to disturbances triggered off by the raping of a female student.

A suspect, Richard Asare, a second year student of Dormaa Secondary School has been arrested in connection with the disturbances and is helping the Police in their investigations. A female student of Berekum Secondary School, who was the rape victim, is receiving treatment at the Presbyterian Hospital at Dormaa Ahenkro.

An eyewitness told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that a group of boys from Dormaa Ahenkro Secondary School invited three female students of Jinijini Secondary School to a drinking spot at Dormaa Ahenkro on Thursday, March 2 and spent 280,000 cedis on them, ostensibly for sex in return.

The eyewitness, who declined identity, said while at the spot the girls introduced themselves as natives of Berekum.

"The girls took permission from the boys to attend to nature's call and bolted away", the witness said.

The boys waited for the girls and realising that the girls would not return, decided to chase them to the dormitory. The witness said at midnight, the boys forcibly entered the dormitory, dragged some of the girls out and hell broke loose. He said the commotion led to some students of Dormaa Secondary School and Berekum Secondary School pelting stones and wielding offensive cudgels and it took the authorities of Dormaa Secondary School several hours to bring the situation under control.

A few minutes later, a female student of Berekum Secondary School was found writhing on the ground in agony and when interrogated disclosed that she had been raped.

The victim later identified Asare as the perpetrator. Mr Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, Dormaa District Director of Education and Mr Alex Baa Bofah, headmaster of Dormaa Secondary School have both condemned the behaviour of the students.

They urged the students to cooperate with the Police and school authorities to bring those responsible for the confusion to justice.
