Baseball League starts on Saturday

The Baseball League for men - Major league - kick-starts this Saturday at the Tema Community Seven, Number Two, JSS Parkwith a crunch encounter between Salvation Stars and New Brotherhood. Other parings in the eight-team league are Saint Necal's versus Asiko Giants, Anosbi Heroes against Rocks of Shai while Patriots lock horns with Sea Hawks.

Mr Jojo-Grant, General Secretary of the Ghana Baseball Association told the GNA in Accra that the little baseball league for juniors and soft ball for ladies are due to commence within the next two or three weeks.

This is subject to the availability of fund which is not forthcoming, he explained The general secretary said the National Sports Council (NSC) has not been able to fulfil its undertaking to assist the association with its annual budget which is seriously hampering the smooth running and organisation of the League.

He said the two parties are planning to find a workable solution to the "no cash syndrome" since it is affecting the sport.

Mr Jojo-Grant regretted however that baseball has been tagged as one of the lesser-known sports in the country whereas it is the richest sporting discipline in the world.

He said there is enormous benefit the nations stands to gaint from sport in terms assistance and returns from the big guns like the US and Japan. The Ghanaian Major League is expected to end in November and the winner would participate in the African Clubs Championship.

The association also hopes to select a crack team in December to represent the country at next year's All African Games slated for Nigeria; where the top two countries would qualify for the Olympic games.

Mr Jojo-Grant said however that the official launching of the league would come off at a later date.
