Tragedy has struck Ghana football as Bono Ahafo-based club, Berekum Chelsea faced a robbery attack while returning from their Ghana Premier League game against Samartex on April 12, 2026.
The incident occurred at Ahyiresu on the Bibiani-Goaso road following their Matchday 29 clash against FC Samartex in Samreboi, where Berekum Chelsea had suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
According to reports, the robbers blocked the road, forcing the team bus to stop before launching the attack. Attempts by the driver to reverse away from the scene proved unsuccessful as the assailants advanced.

The situation quickly escalated, with gunshots reportedly fired, causing panic among the players and technical staff. Several members of the team fled into nearby bushes in a desperate attempt to escape harm.
The team had been traveling back to prepare for their next fixture against Medeama SC, but the shocking incident has now raised serious concerns about safety and security during matchday travels within the league.
One Player Dead
Dominic Frimpong was said to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The 20-year-old had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, a move set to run until the end of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. He had scored two goals in 13 appearances before his untimely death.
Police Investigation
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a manhunt for the attackers, who are currently on the run.
The police have also initiated efforts to locate missing players and officials who scattered during the assault out of fear of being harmed or killed in the chaos.
Aduana Stars club statement
The club expressed deep concern about the incident and offered their condolences to the affected team and the deceased player's family.
"Aduana Football Club is deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving Berekum Chelsea following their Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996. We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Dominic Frimpong, a player we proudly loaned to Berekum Chelsea. This is a devastating loss to both clubs and Ghana football as a whole.
"We extend our deepest condolences to Berekum Chelsea, the family of Dominic Frimpong, his teammates, and all affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
May his soul rest in perfect peace," the statement read.
GFA Vows to Tighten Security
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has released a statement expressing shock and extending condolences to the bereaved family.
The association announced plans to engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.
The GFA also stressed that it will collaborate with the police to ensure the perpetrators face justice.
Bereaved Family Engagement
Officials of Berekum Chelsea are reportedly en route to Assin-Fosu to formally inform the bereaved family of the death.
Afterward, they will engage with the family on the next steps for the burial and how the club can support the funeral rites.
