Bernard Mensah is back

Ghanaian youngster Bernard Mensah has expressed his delight at returning to action following injury and thanked Watford for keeping faith with him.

Mensah suffered a serious knee injury in March whilst on loan at Braintree Town and had to undergo surgery.

He had needed an operation on the same knee in December 2011 and it has been a long road to recovery, but he made his comeback during Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Peterborough United in the Under-21 Premier League Cup.

Mensah told the Watford Observer: “The feeling was more relief because I damaged my left knee two years ago and to do it again left me thinking football might not be for me. So I was relieved to be out there after six months of hard work. I’m finally back.”

“Since I was young I have had a problem with my knee but I think they have corrected it now and there hasn’t been any problems so far. When I did it I thought ‘not again’ but after six months of hard work I’m back and I would say to anyone else in a similar situation to just keep working hard and you will get there.”

Mensah is still only 19 but he admits his injury troubles would have left him considering his future in the game, had it not been for the support shown in him by Watford.

He said: “When the new owners came in, the club had faith in me and gave me a long contract and I want to thank them for that because if I didn’t have that then I would have been left thinking ‘what should I do next?’ And I might not have been playing football any more.

“But it was good to have that security and now I hope to push on.”
