Key personalities from the political, business, pastoral, football and entertainment circles on Thursday evening made the 1965 Black Stars year group’s fund raising dinner gala worthwhile at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Accra.
Peace FM’s morning show host Kwami Sefa Kayi, who emceed the event, in his bit succeeded in drawing from the philanthropic reservoirs of the high profile dignitaries who graced the occasion by selling portraits of the ex-stars as well as customized footballs.
NPP Presidential candidate Nana Akuffo Addo, Despite Group bank roller Dr Osei Kwame, Kenpong Group’s president, Kennedy Agyapong, Young ‘Kofata’, Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, Prophet Emmanuel Kobi, among a host of dignitaries raised a staggering amount close to GHC500,000 in support of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the 65’ National Cup winners.
Highlife greats-Daddy Lumba (DL) and Daniel Amakye Dede and the Asa Band also supported the colourful event dishing out hit after hit from their respective repertoires.
Nana Akufu Addo, who was the Special Guest of Honour countered chairman for the occasion Prophet Kobi’s claim that Ghana is not worth dying for taking into account the unfulfilled promise of a house to the 65’ year Group by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
According to Nana “I don’t share the view of the chairman, I still believe in Ghana. I believe what is ahead of us is better than what has happened in the past.
“If we will contribute our bits in all honesty, we will build a great nation that we are all looking forward to. I want to thank the Despite Group and all who in diverse ways contributed to immortalize our heroes.”
Sadly, three members of the 65’ Group, who were celebrated in a similar program two years ago had passed on leaving ten members of the 22-man squad that conquered Africa in Tunis.
In the maiden edition, Kenpong Group supported the event with GHC20,000. Again, he pledged GHC20,000 plus a bus for this year’s event.
Meanwhile, the occasion witnessed the cutting of a huge birthday cake for veteran broadcast journalist Afia Konadu (Maa Afia) on her 65th milestone.
