Big TV screens for major cities and towns during Ghana 2008

Accra, Aug. 24, GNA - Football fans in and around the country will have the pleasure of watching the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations on big screens to be made available by the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

This is in line with the LOC's legacy and for everyone from the remotest part of the country to all have a feel of the competition, which spans January 20 - February 10, 2008.

Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Operating Officer of LOC told the GNA Sports that the concept is to dissuade football fans outside the four main venues of Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale from travelling long distances to watch matches during the three-week championships. He said that about one million visitors are expected in the country within the period and there is likely to be congestion at match centres with everybody likely to watch and catch their stars live in action. "The idea is to prevent and reduce the number of people especially those from the four venues from trooping to match centres for every match."

Mr Danquah hinted that his outfit is in the process of identifying vantage points within some major cities and towns where fans can watch the games on big screens at their comfort with special emphasis on the number of inhabitants.

In the interim, he cited Ho, Koforidua, Nkawkaw, Nsawam and the Legon campus of the University of Ghana as some few places who will benefit from the facility.

Even though discussions are at the initial stage, the Operating Officer assured that there would be enough big screens to satisfy the soccer-crazy Ghanaian populace. This is the first time that football fans will be enjoying such a facility, which is common in the developed world especially during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
