Head coach of the Black Queens of Ghana, Yussif Basigi says he has set sights on the Africa Women’s Championship (AWC) title billed for October in Namibia.

Ghana has been paired in Group B alongside Algeria, Cameroon and four times champions South Africa but Basigi feels confident his charges are well prepared to go past the group stage and win the trophy for the first time.

“I have targeted the trophy though the authority didn’t give me that target. I have set that ambition for myself with the players. So that is the task we set for ourselves. It’s not going to be easy but we will do our possible best to achieve that goal,” he told GNA Sports.

“At the moment we preparing ourselves with the conditioning test and this is the second week of our preparations in that aspect. We will then continue with techniques and tactics and blend it with speed endurance and fortunately, we have no injury worries at the moment and I pray for an injury free preparation”. Basigi added that, the players are psychologically prepared and have the mindset to be in Namibia and win the trophy for the first time.

Ghana open their campaign with a game against Algeria and then lock horns with South Africa with the final group game against Cameroon.

In Group A, hosts, Namibia have been drawn against champions, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire and Zambia.

The Namibia tournament serves as a FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying event, the champions, runners-up and third placed team will qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Canada.
