Joseph Esso’s goal gave Ghana a win over Gambia in the ongoing WAFU Cup of Nations at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal.
Maxwell Konadu’s side were strong in the first 10 minutes as the team came close to the opening goal after Joseph Esso unleashed a long-range thunderbolt.
That effort, however, went narrowly wide.
The Ghanaian goal came in the 66th minute when a low pin-point cross was converted home from six yards out by the Esso.
In the 80th minute, the Scorpions were gifted a chance to draw level but the penalty awarded by the referee was missed by the Gambians.
Alhassan Mohammed was adjudged to have fouled Moudou Cham inside the box in a controversial call.
Cham, though, failed to take the golden chance when he struck the penalty against the left post.
As a result of the win, the Black Stars are through to the quarter finals, where they will play Burkina Faso.
That match will be on Friday, October 4.
