DESPITE their ouster from the CAF Africa Cup Of Nations billed for Gabon/Equitorial Guinea next year, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will today engage their counterparts, Black Stars of Ghana in a rescheduled international friendly in London.
The match which was earlier fixed for August 9, 2011, was postponed due to unrest in London. The match was expected to hold at Watford's Vicarage Road Stadium, but police strongly advised the organisers against allowing the match to go ahead due to violent protests that had greeted many parts of London as a result of a killing by the police.
Eagles will now have to use the friendly encounter to gain the confidence that Nigerians have lost in them due to their dismal performance against the Syli Stars of Guinea after playing a 2-2 draw in a Nations Cup qualifier decided at the Abuja National Stadium over the weekend.
It would be recalled that the Black Stars of Ghana beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 4-1 in their last international friendly in 2007. From 1973 to 2007, a total of six friendly matches were played between the two countries. The statistics are as follow:
1973-Nigeria 4 Ghana 2
1978-Ghana 0 Nigeria 0
1999-Nigeria 0 Ghana 0
2002-Ghana 0 Nigeria 1
2003-Nigeria 3 Ghana 1
2007-Nigeria 1 Ghana 4
