The senior national team, the Black Stars, has been offered every technical support by government to deliver at the AFCON in Equatorial Guinea.
The team’s budget has been approved, and all other required support has been offered the team by government to forestall the controversies that marred the footballing image of the country during the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
The Minister for Sports, Hon. Mahama Ayariga made the disclosures during a tour of sports facilities at the Prempeh College in Kumasi yesterday.
Prempeh College has been selected as one of the ten Senior High Schools across the country to be developed into sports academies, as government seeks to improve on sporting facilities as a way of identifying and nurturing sports talents in the country.
Hon. Ayariga said, the Black Stars is a huge brand for the nation.
“Anytime the team plays in international tournaments there is PR mileage, it’s therefore prudent to invest in the team accordingly,” he said.
‘Countries spend huge sums of money to get a fraction of airtime on international media platforms such as the CNN, BBC, etc., but with the Black Stars, Ghana gets that for free” Hon. Ayariga added.
“The team deserves every investment. I approved the team’s budget and am happy and satisfied for approving it” The Minister stressed.
Hon, Ayariga assured that work will soon begin on sporting facilities on the school’s campus to merit a world class sports academy status.
This, according to the Minister will be achieved with the provision of standard infrastructure and facilities.
It’s government’s policy to push for the development of sports in our schools. He said
“Government is bent on building the needed sporting infrastructure in the schools as a policy to help identify and build the capacity of sports across the country”. Hon. Ayariga revealed
He commended the Ghana Education Service for the selection of schools across the country to be used as Academies.
“Technical teams, programmes directors, instructors and coaches from the national sports college are on stand-by to start work once the Academies are ready”. He assured.
Adding that, financiers are awaiting the final budget on the ten sports academies across the ten regions of the country.
