The Blackstar team who lit up the 2010 World Cup with their run to the quarter-finals are to be honoured at a London awards ceremony next month.
The Black Stars became only the third African team in World Cup history to advance to the quarter-finals of the showpiece event, but were knocked out on penalties by Uruguay.
They won a host of new admirers in South Africa for their committed performances, team spirit and positive attitude, which stood in marked contrast to teams such as England, France and Italy, who endured miserable World Cups.
Now the four-time Africa Cup of Nations winners are set to be honoured for their achievement at the Ghana UK Based Achievement [GUBA] awards ceremony in London on October 24 at the Porchester Hall.
Amongst the attendees at the event will be Ghana captain John Mensah, who is currently on loan at Sunderland from Lyon, and Asamoah Gyan, who recently also joined the North East club and scored three goals at the 2010 World Cup.
Fulham's John Painstil and Chelsea's Michael Essien - who missed out on the World Cup through injury - have also confirmed their attendance.
Mensah said: "This is great news It makes us as a team feel appreciated for what we do for our nation, as we don’t often get awards in Ghana.
"It’s an honour to hear and see how encouraging the GUBA Awards have been towards us."
Television presenter Dentaa Afriyie-Sumpa, who is the mastermind behind the awards ceremony, said: "The Ghana Black Stars deserve recognition for marking Ghana on the global map. During the World Cup the team were not just supported by Africans; they had support from around the world.
"Their performance encouraged so much love and unity, and that doesn’t happen often enough."
