Boxing: Western meet Central again

ON 31st May, 2003, Cape Coast Top Yard Cinema will rock to its foundation as fans who are starved of Boxing fiesta will have their desire fulfilled with anticipation of yet another boxing bonanza involving central and Western regions, coming seven months after the last tournament dubbed “Akotoworabam Nite”part three.

The tournament dubbed “Determination against Experience” would be put up by Walker-King Promotion & Management Syndicate in association with the Central Regional Boxing Promotions Committee, under the auspice of Ghana Boxing Authority (G.B.A), features Cape Coast sensational professional Boxer, Ali Alabi, with a yet-to-be-named boxer from Accra in a featherweight contest as the main bout.

The first encounter dubbed “Re-emergence of a Lost Treasure” only amateurs was held last year 26th December, 2002 in Takoradi which ended 4-3 in favour of Central Region, and was promoted by West Bay Ventures, under directorship of Mr Jam Kay, also interim chairman of the western Regional Boxing Promotions Committee.In an interview with Graphic Sports, the promoter Mr Twintoh Walker, said the tournament is the return leg encounter arranged under the directions of Ghana Boxing Authority to create awareness among boxing fans of the re-emergence of the discipline in both regions.

When the reporter asked why the title? Determination against Experience” Mr Walker traced the history of the results of boxing tournament between the two regions and said it always favours central and thus western are coming with a greater determination to avenge and turn the clock, but central would exhibit a lot of experience to maintain the trend.

The tournament promises to be very tough and interesting in regard to what took place in Takoradi in the first bout. All boxers were fit, strong and exhibited a lot of skills and flair. Armed with this, Mr Walker said the trainers of Central Regional squad, coach Adoray Arthur and coach Ato Daniels, were of the view that westerners were very good side and would do a lot of work on the boys to ensure total victory.

Side attraction will be another titanic fight between two famous and well known radio presenters from different stations in Takoradi. Kuntu and Kwame Gyakoto will lock horns to break ties, this time at Cape Coast i.e outside their region. The first bout ended in a draw at Takoradi. There is going to be a live commentary on the tournament from a number of western Region radio stations. Rates: Inner Ringside — ?10,000, Outer Ringside — ?5,000 and popular stand — ?3,000.
