At the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations John Boye showed signs that he had developed into something genuinely solid.
The 25 year-old central defender before the competition was regarded by some as a squad player with others even questioning his inclusion in the 23-man Black Stars squad.
However, an assured display in the opening match against Botswana, which earned him a man-of-the-match award set the tone for a revision of notes as many who doubted his abilities soon fell in love with him.
Boye radiates not only positivity but holds a great conviction that he is not in the business to prove the doubters wrong but only to work hard and play to win.
"I believe I can improve if I only commit to working hard," Boye said. "I am happy if my performances has been noticed and appreciated. It tells me that at least I am doing something right."
"But it also tells me that I need to work harder and be at my best. I think I can improve more because I have everything to prove."
The feeling appears great for Boye who made his Ghana debut in June 2008 and had to wait for almost four years to establish himself as he paired in central defence with captain John Mensah in his debut Nations Cup tournament.
Maybe he earned his place by dint of luck as regular first choice; Isaac Vorsah was suspended for the opening two matches at the tournament. But his ability and work-rate proved that he deserved it.
"I understand that in football, every player who works hard will get an opportunity one day. I have been around for sometime but never got the chance until before the Nations Cup.
"I think the coaches saw something in me and that is the only reason why I would be considered good enough for a place on the team. I got my chance to play and I just wanted to do my best. I am happy to represent my country," the Rennes defender said.
Boye has come to the fore now even though Ghana, who were tipped as title favourites failed to make their mark at the competition. The Black Stars had to settle for fourth place.
And he says he wants to succeed with the national team as key figure and win many things.
"I want to get better and be a much better player not only at club level but with the national team. I need to be consistent," he said.
"And I want to win titles and do everything with Ghana."
