Accra, May 19, GNA - Braimah Kamoko, the boxer the fans prefer to call "Bukom Banku" said he was capable of winning a world title in the light heavyweight division for Ghana if he was given the opportunity to fight the champion.
He told the GNA Sports in Accra on Wednesday that he was the most credible Ghanaian candidate for a world title shot and advised the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to do everything it could to give him a title fight.
"Tell GBA to give me a fight against Roy Jones or Antonio Tarver (conqueror of Jones via a second round knockout) and Ghana will once again have a worthy world champion. Foh-Amoaning (acting GBA chairman) knows that I can win a world title for Ghana but he is not doing anything to promote me."
Bukom Banku who has fought eight times, winning all, six by way of early stoppages said all that he thinks about now is a world title fight.
"I am ready to sacrifice my blood to win a world title but the GBA only pushes its favourites and that is why we don't have world champions now.
"Many boxing connoisseurs including Ike Quartey, a former World Boxing Association (WBA) champion tell me that Ghana's hopes for a world title are on me and I want to prove them right by winning the title." He said he would like the GBA to realise that he was the number one boxer in Ghana in terms of style and attraction because he holds the fans spellbound with his pre match disposition that hypes boxing matches to the crescendo, compelling the fans to rush for tickets.
"The fans like what I say and they want to come and see me do my thing and even my alias name, "Bukom Banku" causes a stir among boxing fans and generates a lot of excitement on its own. I am a crowd puller and boxing needs guys like me to survive. Tell them, Braimah said.
On the recent spate of losses in British rings by Ghanaian boxers, Braimah said Ghanaian boxers expose themselves to scientific scrutiny by agents of their opponents as they prepare for fights in overseas gyms owned by friends of their opponents and advised boxers who travel to the U.K. to link up with Ike Quartey Snr who operates a modern gym in London.
He said as he awaited action from the GBA and the promoters to match him up against Jones or Tarver for the ultimate, he would like to duel with locals James Toney, Charles Adamu or Aloyi Moyoyo in catchweight contests and called on promoters to make the fights. But when one of the boxers Aloyi Moyoyo was contacted, he said he would not fight Bukom Banku since such a combat would only draw him back and slow down his forward march.
Moyoyo advised Banku to fight more credible opponents and enrich his record before demanding to fight him. 19 May 04
