Former Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor
Former Black Stars head coach C.K. Akonnor has expressed concern over the team’s humiliating performance in the international friendly game against Austria.
The Black Stars suffered a 5-1 loss in Friday’s friendly, a result that marked the first time Ghana had conceded five goals in a match since a 5-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia in 2007.
Speaking to Citi Sports, CK Akonnor acknowledged the importance of international friendlies but insisted that the number of goals conceded was unacceptable for the Black Stars.
“We play friendly matches to assess ourselves, but conceding five goals is just too much for a team like Ghana,” CK Akonnor said.
Akonnor’s comments have heightened scrutiny over the Black Stars’ recent performances, particularly in defense with fans and analysts increasingly questioning the team’s readiness ahead of crucial competitive fixtures.
The Black Stars will play their second game in the March 2026 international window against Germany in Stuttgart on Monday, March 30.
The Austria and Germany friendlies form part of Ghana’s build-up to the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage.
