Ghana forward Abdul Majeed Waris has opined that it will make absolute sense if the Ghana FA cancels the 2019-20 season, as the country’s football governing body races against time to make a definite decision on the future of suspended competitions.

The CoronaVirus pandemic has thrown the original plans for the season into disarray with the football calendar jeopardized.

The Ghana FA has suspended all football activities indefinitely which is in compliance with a government directive banning all public gatherings, including sporting events, in the wake of the global pandemic.

All over the world, leagues and competition organizers are taking decisions about the future of the current season.

Last week, the Dutch Football Federation cancelled the Dutch Top Flight, while the two top tier leagues in France (Ligue 1 and Ligue 2) have also been cancelled.

As uncertainty hovers around the future of the 2019-20 campaign, and CAF requesting the GFA to make a decision not later than May 5, Abdul Majeed Waris believes it will be a very sensible decision to take should the season be cancelled.

He told Accra based Asempa FM, “Yeah, for me I think it will be very sensible for something like that (league cancellation) to happen. Every time I monitor the situation in Ghana, I can see the numbers increase. Especially when government lifted the lockdown, you can see that the numbers are going very high. So I think for the safety of everyone, let’s cancel everything (football season)”.

The GFA has arranged virtual meetings with all stakeholders to deliberate on the way forward for Ghana Football in these challenging times. A decision is expected to be made in the coming days.

In case the season is cancelled, the GFA will need to decide on ho to select representatives for Ghana in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
