Fenerbahce midfielder Stephen Appiah is close to agreeing a move to Celtic - but misfit Thomas Gravesen may have to be sent packing first.

Appiah, the 26-year-old Ghana captain, is available for around £5.7million but according to the Times - and more than one person who has contacted us - the wages seem to be the sticking point.

The former Juventus star apparently wants £40,000-a-week, and that is rumoured to be exactly the same amount of money as former Real Madrid Galactico Gravesen currently earns. But does 'one in, one out' make sense in this situation?

Possibly, but arguments could be made for keeping Gravesen instead. Although he didn't perform for Celtic last season, and fell out of the first-team picture by the time of the Scottish Cup win, he has shown in the past that he is suited to football on this island.

However, the same cannot be said of Appiah, who has spent all of his career either in Africa or around the Mediterranean. For £5.7million and more than £2million-a-year in wages, fans will want a player who can cope with the conditions and settle as soon as possible.

And would Appiah be the 'wow' signing that is expected to arrive at Parkhead? It's hard to tell, but until a club makes a move for Gravesen, and Gravesen decides to move, it's questionable whether the club would risk having two £40,000-a-week earners on the books.
