Central Region makes bright start at national sports festival

Cape Coast, Aug 26, GNA - The Central regional team made a bright start in the football competition at the start of the 28th National Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival on Monday, when they beat the defending champions, Ashanti Region 4-2 on penalties after they drew goalless at full time.

The Central Regional keeper, Joseph Abeka, who did a yeoman's job in the posts stood his grounds as he made two penalty saves to deny the Ashanti Regional team to win the match.

About 1,500 school children drawn from various basic schools in the country are taking part in the week long Sport Festival during which laurels will be competed for in soccer, athletics, volley ball, handball and tennis.

In another soccer match, Brong Ahafo Region beat Volta Region 1-0, while in the boys' 1,500 metres race, Jeck Anyinan of the Ashanti Region team came first in a time of 4min. 14 secs and compatriot Anthony Opoku coming second with Timothy Yimbil of the Northern Region placing third. In the girls' division, Abena Azumata of Western Region came first in a time of 4min. 42 sec, followed by Sarah Addo of the Eastern Region at the second position while Beatrice Konama of Brong Ahafo Region placed third.
