Ghana Premier League legend Charles Taylor has relived some of his early career moments, detailing how he sneaked out of the apartment of a football academy in Obuasi.

Charles Taylor recounted in an interview with the Sports Heroes channel that his talent impressed some senior figures in his hometown who advised him to join an academy in Obuasi.

While there, Charles Taylor found life a bit uninspiring and decided to leave the academy for his hometown one morning.

“When they realized in Sehwi that I was a good player, people started paying attention to me. The team belonged to the working union in the area, but once they realized my talent, they sent me to Obuasi. So I went to Obuasi to play with the likes of Nana Arhinduah.

“Life at the academy became boring for me, and also I didn’t have boots, so Nana Arhinduah gave me boots. One dawn, I threw my bag through the window, sneaked out, and went back to my hometown. When I got there, they were surprised, but I lied to them that we had been given permission to leave camp.”

Charles Taylor also detailed how his first stint with the youth team of Hearts of Oak failed and how he ended up at the Accra Great Olympics.

“At Hearts of Oak, I met Ben Kayode and Offei Ansah, but it didn’t take long for Kayode to move to Great Olympics. I was at Hearts for a month but was not allowed to play proper football except for training.

“So, we visited Offei Ansah and asked why he wasn’t allowing me to play and he assured me that my time will come. We were there one Friday when Ben Kayode visited and asked my brother to bring me to the Olympics training ground on Monday. I met Laryea Kingston, Godwin Attram, and Dan Quaye there with Attuquayefio as the coach. So when Laryea Kingston and the seniors left, we were drafted into the first team," he said.

Charles Taylor won multiple league titles with both Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
