Euro 2024, hosted in Germany, began on Friday, featuring a match between Germany and Scotland.
The tournament, which garners global attention, will see numerous players of Ghanaian descent representing European teams. Previous winners of the UEFA European Championship include Italy (2020), Portugal (2016), and Spain (2008 and 2012).
Several notable players of Ghanaian heritage are expected to make a significant impact:
Netherlands: Memphis Depay, Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo, and Brian Brobbey.
Depay, a former Manchester United forward, debuted internationally in 2013. Frimpong, born to Ghanaian parents, has played for the Netherlands at various youth levels and made his senior debut in 2021.
Gakpo, with Ghanaian roots through his father, debuted in the Netherlands squad at UEFA Euro 2020. Brobbey has represented the Netherlands at U17 and U19 levels, recently earning his first senior call-up in October 2023.
England: Kobbie Mainoo, a promising young midfielder for Manchester United, has represented England at U17 and U18 levels. Despite strong interest from the Ghanaian FA, Mainoo has chosen to play for the Three Lions.
Spain: Nico Williams, an Athletic Bilbao star, will feature for Spain. His brother, Inaki, plays for Ghana. Nico debuted for Spain in 2022 and participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Austria: Kevin Danso, a defender for RC Lens, began his career in Austria’s youth teams and made his senior debut in 2017. Under the guidance of manager Ralf Rangnick, Danso aims to replicate his impressive Ligue 1 form at Euro 2024.
Switzerland: Kwadwo Duah, recently named in Switzerland's final squad, will represent the team. Duah, who plays alongside Ghanaian winger Bernard Tekpetey at Ludogorets in Bulgaria, was born in London.
