Chelsea Defender Josh Acheampong draws Premier League interest

English-Ghanaian Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, but the Blues have so far rebuffed approaches for the 20-year-old defender.

Crystal Palace are among the clubs monitoring the centre-back's situation, with a loan move being considered. However, the Eagles have received no encouragement from Chelsea, who view Acheampong as having "untouchable" status at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being highly rated within the club's academy system, Acheampong made only 17 Premier League appearances last season, with nine of those as a substitute.

His contract with Chelsea runs until 2029, but there are questions from those close to the player about whether he will be given assurances of regular first-team football and a clear plan for his development.

The lack of clarity over his future has led to frustration about his limited minutes, with a number of Premier League and overseas clubs registering interest directly with his representatives.

Arsenal and Newcastle are also known to be monitoring the situation, while Bournemouth retain an interest that dates back to last summer.

Acheampong, who has represented England at U21 level, is understood to be keen on playing regular football. Whether Chelsea will loosen their grip on the young defender remains to be seen, but the growing interest from Premier League rivals suggests his situation will be one to watch as the transfer window progresses.
