Coach Addo explains Adams first choice decision

Wad Medany, Sudan, Feb. 7, GNA - Head coach of the local Black Stars, Herbert Addo has explained the choice of Stephen Adams as his first choice goalkeeper over favourite Sammy Adjei at the ongoing African Nations Championship in Sudan.

The reigning best shot stopper in the local scene surprisingly got the nod over the much-experienced Adjei in the Stars Group B opener against South Africa last Saturday where they lost 1-2 at the second edition of the tournament meant for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.

Addo told GNA Sports in Wad Medany, Sudan that the choice of Adam was upon the recommendation of the goalkeepers' trainer Yakubu Nassamu of Medeama SC after critical observation of the three goalies at various stages of their preparations.

"The goalkeepers' trainer decided which of them (Adams, Adjei and Isaac Amoako) was the best at the time. We had two weeks of training, played amongst ourselves, friendly matches and observed all three goalkeepers. On the day, Adams was the best of the three keepers."

The veteran trainer dismissed reports that he favoured Adams because they are from the same Club (Aduana) insisting the decision was in the interest of the team and the nation as a whole.

"People will always talk. For me, it doesn't matter who plays, because they are playing for Ghana."

From indications Adjei has fallen behind the pecking order and may play second fiddle to Adams at least for now.

Adams rose to prominence after his performance with Aduana Stars last season, whilst Adjei is returning to the national team after two-year absence.
