Commercial drivers who were once ominous about bad leadership at Ghana’s football governing body – the Ghana Football Association, are now expressing hope and trust in George Afriyie to administer football with his vision.

Seven aspirants including the CAF AFCON Organising Committee member have put themselves up for the race to become the next President of the Football Association in the West African powerhouse following the exit of former President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Afriyie’s popularity is transcending beyond the 120 delegates of the football association as the masses are rooting for him to become the next President.

“I know Mr George Afriyie has been a football investor for a long time. The last time I heard on radio that as far back as 1993 when Ghana was playing the U17 World Cup in Japan he was serving as a porter for the team. I heard he was a young businessman working in Japan but he made that time to do this for Ghana. For me this is enough,” a commercial driver by name Kwaku Boahen told Ghana Sports.

Another driver known as Alhassan Kubewa, who plies his trade within the inner city of Accra, added in Twi: “I think George knows the system and understands how things work better than the rest because he has worked so many years at the GFA, CAF and also at FIFA. He should be allowed to run football on his vision so Ghana can achieve development.”

Some commercial drivers have gone to the extent of sticking campaign posters of the former GFA Vice President on their vehicles in what has been described as a demonstration of support.

Afriyie has received massive endorsement from club owners in the country as well as football investors. Team George achieved the highest endorsement among all aspirants as 12 out of the 16 Premier League clubs signed his documents with 20 Division One League clubs doing same.

The GFA elections is slated for October 27, 2019.
