Commey, Baah-Danso win ultimate at 2020 Chairman’s Cup

Emmanuel Commey emerged champion in the Men’s Division of the Ghana Table Tennis Association season opener, the Chairman’s Cup while Celia Baah-Danso retained her crown in the Women’s Division.

Buoyant Commey beat runner-up Ernest Mawutor in the Men’s finals as Baah-Danso overpowered Eva Adom Amankwa 3-2 in the Women’s finals.

The one-day championship was held at the Fantasy Dome of the Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Saturday, 15 February 2020.

President of the Ghana Table Tennis Federation, Mawuko Afadzinu, was elated with the level of table tennis displayed on the day.

“We are excited about the energy levels, the performance levels and the intensity we are seeing. It tells us that in our midst, we have talents who have what it takes to become champions and to make Ghana proud. That is what we are going to build on. So, today, we are seeing very positive and strong sides”, he said.

Emmanuel Commey took home a cash prize of GHS1,500 while runner-up Ernest Mawutor was rewarded with GHS1,000. Other winners in the Men’s Division are Emmanuel Asante, who had GHS750; and GHS500 went to Bernard Joe-Sam, who finished fourth.

Isaac Davis – 5th, Augustine Baido – 6th, Joshua Okine – 7th and Ishmael Addy – 8th, were all given GHS250 for their efforts.

In the Women’s category, Celia Baah-Danso took home a cash reward of GHS1,000, while runner-up Eva Adom Amankwah was presented with GHS500, Cynthia Kwabi – 3rd and Cecilia Fremah – 4th, were presented with GHS250, respectively.

What happened in the Junior’s Division?

Promising talent Ibrahim Gado defeated Richard Ofori to win the Junior Boys’ Division. Gado earned GHS500 for his exploits, with Richard Ofori getting GHS200 as Francis Antwi – 3rd and Charles Kose – 4th, were rewarded with GHS100 each.

Emmanuella Yaa Kyere won the Junior Girls’ category having beaten Joana Ammisah in the finals. Yaa Kyere was presented with GHS400, Amissah had GHS200 with 3rd finisher, Selassie Doku and 4th-placed, Esmeralda Okyere taking home GHS00, respectively.

What next after the Chairman’s Cup?

President of the GTTA, Mawuko Afadzinu outlined plans of his outfit for the remainder of the year.

“A lot is going to happen. Two national Stars will be playing in an Olympic qualifiers in a fortnight from now. Then, we will have a celebrity open in March. We have the national knockout competition which heralds the beginning of our National League.

Beyond the National Professional League, this year we are going to have a Corporate League. We will have Inter-Community competitions. Finally, we have the one for the young ones. We will have competitions and organise clinics for those we call the Cadet [Under 12, 15 and 18]. It’s going to be an active year”.

The New Juaben Table Tennis Club based in the Eastern Region also made a donation to the GTTA at the Chairman’s Cup ahead of the National Open Champion in April.
