The Commonwealth and Akuafo Halls have been crown grand masters of University of Ghana handball as they won the Men and Women’s categories of the 2019 UG handball League.
The Jubilee Hall men’s handball team lacked the needed concentration and endurance to run their usual speed game when they faced off the defensive Commonwealth hall handball team at the newly built UG Sports Directorate handball court.
Coached by former University of Ghana handball star Salman Adam, the current Ghana Police handball team goalkeeper led his side to a resounding victory, restricting sharp shooters Senam and Sarkodie while smart wing man Raymond became virtually harmless despite causing mild problems for the big boys from the hills”.
Joseph Quaidoo was Commonwealth’s secret weapon as the effective pivot bagging sixteen goals all by himself with Elvis Oko Sowah scoring nine times in a game that looked far easier on the offence than the defence.
“We were not concentrating. At a point in time I felt my big men were not concentrating. We used a lot of energy but we were not determined as we were in the Sarbah game,” a dejected Jubilee Hall coach Emmanuel Sam stated.
Smiling Commonwealth handball coach, Salman Adam, also disclosed to UniversSports that their victory was a blend of talent and strategy.
“I studied the JISH side in about three games and realized they run more so we needed the right tactics. Having quality players, though they can perform individually you need the right tactics”
It’s being a good year for the Commonwealth hall having dominated sporting activities this year.
In the women’s final the Akuaffo Hall handball team prevailed over the exciting Volta Hall side. An intense match saw a slim 19-15 scoreline which at the end favored the Female farmers who disturbed the beautiful Commonwealth-Volta blend, lifting the glittering 2019 women’s handball Trophy in the stead of the all female hall.
The female Farmers beat Jubilee Hall before eliminating the Mensah Sarbah women’s handball team en route to the final.
In a post match reaction, Akuafo women’s Handball captain Victoria Aborge ‘let the skeleton out of the cupboard’ on their fruitful campaign.
“It was very challenging for us, because the game was players around the exam period. I am happy because we had great coordination in and out of the court and how we played in our ‘D’ ”
