New Youth and Sports Minister, Honourable Mahama Ayariga has expressed disappointment at the performance of team Ghana at the just ended Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Team Ghana went to the games with 86 athletes to compete in 17 different events but eventually came home with only two bronze medals, one from Judo and another from boxing.
Team Ghana’s performance at the Commonwealth Games saw no improvement over the last Commonwealth Games staged in Delhi, India, where team Ghana had only three medals.
Apart from the poor outing of the team in Glasgow, the entire contingent lamented on unpaid allowances as well as per diems which compelled the minister to visit the team in Glasgow and promise them payment of their due immediately, a pledge which was redeemed.
Misunderstandings that occurred among athletes and the leadership, led by Professor Francis Dodoo, culminated in the expulsion of Nartey from the games even before it ended. The National Chief Athletic Coach, Albert Nukpeza was not the only coach who was dropped; the trainer of the Paralympian team at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was also left behind before the team enplaned to Glasgow.
These events have compelled the Minister of Youth and Sports to announce his displeasure at the performance of Team Ghana and hinting at setting a committee to look into the matter.
“Let me say that I am not too impressed with the performance of Team Ghana, but that challenge provides us with an opportunity as a nation to mobilize to make a change in the not too distant future”, Honourable Mahama Ayariga said.
