Construction works Accra Stadium well within schedule

Accra, Jan 16, GNA - The Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra is well within schedule for Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations contrary to public apprehension about the spate of work.

Major works at the venue is moving steadily with the deadline for completion of the rehabilitation fixed for October. The GNA Sports team's visit to the stadium confirms that the sub-structure considered as the core of the refurbishment has been completed.

Jimmy Castagna, Technical Director of Micheletti and Co, contractors of the Stadium told the GNA Sports that his outfit will raise the structures that will form the stands in the next seven weeks. The VIP area is also within schedule with its roofing billed for June.

The Technical Director said the stadium is expected to have twelve exit points and other special entrances basically for emergencies.

There will also be special gates reserved for players and match officials.

The media center expected to be on top of the changing rooms and the mixed zone is expected to accommodate 250 people. The media will similarly have a spacious car park capable of housing 123 parking lots.

Castagna said the fixing of the forty thousand plastic chairs, which will require about eight weeks for completion will commence in July.

He said the seats are fire proof and have between 10-15 years life span.

About 70 percent work has been done on the field with the grassing blossoming.

The contractors are hoping to hand over the venue on October. The stadium is expected host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the biannual fiesta.
