Accra, Aug 16, GNA - Big wigs in the construction business are lining up to undo each other in the award of contracts for the construction and renovation of sports stadia that would host the 2008 Cup of African Nations in Ghana.

Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, minister of Education, Youth and Sports announced in Accra on Thursday that eight applications had so far reached his office.

Though the minister did not name the companies, GNA Sports investigations revealed that Bilfinger and Berger, the German company, which built the Nigerian National Stadium in Abuja is among the bidders.

Mr Rolf Sudmann, General Manager, International Division of the construction giants is in town and met with a high-powered ministerial team and the top brass of the GFA at the new GFA secretariat on Thursday.

Mr Baah-Wiredu said the Bid Committed had completed its activities and would soon wind up while a Tenders' Committee would be established for the award of contracts for the stadia.

He said by his calculations, it would take about 35 months to complete the construction of the new stadia in Tamale and Sekondi and confirmed that land had already been acquired in the two cities for the projects.

There were other interested bidders at the soccer governing body's secretariat but they declined to disclose the companies they represented when GNA Sports accosted them.

Ghana will construct two new stadia in Tamale and Sekondi and renovate the Accra and Kumasi stadia for the 2008 Cup of African Nations.
