Coronavirus: Legon Cities FC insist they haven't flouted any law despite camping players

Ghanaian top-flight side Legon Cities FC insists their decision to camp their players is not against any law in the fight against the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

As part of measures to control the spread of the virus, the government placed a ban on all public gatherings and also issued a directive for Ghanaians to maintain social distancing.

Following the announcement, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) suspended all football activities in the country.

The GFA also informed clubs to stop training and send their players home to avoid breaking the social distancing rule.

But Legon Cities have been camping in the Volta Region despite all clubs suspending their activities.

The club is said to have been reported to the GFA by a whistle-blower who wants them punished.

However, the club has released a statement to explain their decision not to break their players and keep them together.

According to the statement signed by Communications Director Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang, their decision is not against any law because they have been observing all necessary protocols.

The statement read; "This is to debunk stories being reported by a section of the public and news outlets that Legon Cities FC has flouted the laws of the land and that of the Football Association and the President, His Excellency Nana Akufo Addo."

"We are a law-abiding club and would not engage in such an act. What we have done as a club is to keep the players in camp away from all the challenges associated with the virus. This is to help monitor the players devoid of any acts that would put them in harm’s way."

"We are very much aware of the directives by the Football Association. We are strictly observing the COVID protocols. We are camping in a zone where security is prevalent and if we had broken any rules, we would have been dealt with by Security in the region."

"We wish to reiterate that we are not doing anything untoward but at huge expense to the club, have decided to keep the players together as part of our safety measures against the COVID. Please treat any such story of the club flouting the COVID rules with the contempt it deserves."
