The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) has penciled down 18 girls for the forthcoming African Women tournament slated for The Gambia from October 25 to November 1.

Technical handlers of GCA picked the 18 from a pool of 36 girls after a two-day intensive selection program across the country from cricket academies, schools and communities in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central, Western and Greater Accra regions.

It was the 5th in the series of the annual girls’ invitational tournament held on the women’s development program of GCA.

GCA coaches took the girls, who would be camped ahead of The Gambia tourney, through basic drills on batting, bowling and fielding which was followed by direct assessments in trial matches.

The impending North West Africa Cricket Council Women’s (NWACC) tournament will see Ghana playing alongside Cameroon, Nigeria, Mali, Morocco and Sierra Leone.

It will be Ghana’s first participation in an international female cricket competition.

General Secretary of GCA, Francis Asare, expressed the hope that the National Sports Authority and the Youth and Sports Ministry as well as corporate Ghana will provide the necessary support for the team.
