Cudjoe Fianoo outlines financial implications of playing behind closed doors

Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Cudjoe Fianoo has said the idea of playing matches behind closed doors when the local league resumes will not be financially beneficial to clubs.

Fianoo admits that such an arrangement will further impact negatively on the finances of clubs whose main source of revenue depends on match proceeds.

The Ghanaian leagues and other football competitions have been suspended since March this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

With plans to resume playing underway, stakeholders have been sharing their opinions on how football can be resumed in the safest manner.

One major suggestion has been about playing behind closed doors; a move that has been endorsed by the GFA’s medical team as well as the Ghana Health Service.

Fianoo, however, disagrees as he believes clubs will suffer if this arrangement comes to fruition.

He explained his reasons in an interview with Kumasi based OTEC FM.

“Our major source of revenue is playing at home. Clubs will suffer if we decide to play matches behind closed doors because there is no sponsorship for our league. We had a meeting with the GFA to see how we will go about it” Fianoo told OTEC FM.

“Which team in Ghana will get that $80 – $100 to text a player every time like what the Europeans are doing,” he quizzed.

“We shouldn’t compare ourselves to the Europeans because we are a 3rd World country not like them who have advanced and have more advantages than we do” Fianoo concluded.
