Accra, Jan. 6, GNA - The second edition of the innovative Ghana cycling league kick-starts in March, this year, after two years break. Ten cycling clubs across the country are expected to compete in the league to be dominated by seven cycling clubs from the Greater Accra region.

In spite of the fact that it will be teams affair, the races will showcase the immaculate cycling prowess of last year's SWAG cyclist of the year, John Zormelo of River Park, Joseph Annag of Guten, Emmanuel Waryo of All Stars and Newton Coffie of Nepon club.

Mr Shaaban Mohammed, President of ASONE Sports Promotion Syndicate, organizers of the league under the auspices of the Ghana Cycling Association told the GNA Sports in Accra that the league went on break after its maiden edition in 2001 in order to put some structures right and source for more funding.

The event's main sponsor, COWBELL has been overstretched and as such, ASONE are liaising with other companies to rope in to make the league a success.

The cycling family has had tremendous support from Big, Wooden among a host of other sponsors and Mr Mohammed express the hope that all these companies will come on board to project the image of the Sport founded in Ghana by ex-military man Mike Adjivon, on 3rd June, 1953. The league system is the first of its kind on the continent and some countries including South Africa have contacted ASONE to tap ideas to start a similar programme in that country.

Mr Mohammed told the GNA that the aim of the league is to spread the sport wide enough, to keep the cyclists busy, which is a sure way of producing world-class cyclists for Ghana.

The Ghana cycling team conquered the sub-region in all the tour events but were axed from the contingents that represented the country at last year's Abuja All Africa Games due to lack of funds.
