Abukari Damba has stated that Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Algeria in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 1993 denied him a chance to play for Paris Saint Germain FC.

Black Stars were drawn in the same group with Algeria and Burundi and a final group game would have earned them a place in the play-off, but they missed out through comedy of errors in a game against Algeria dubbed the ‘Tlemcen debacle’ and Abukari Damba happened to be the shot-stopper.

According to Damba, he was being monitored by PSG, but unfortunately he and the entire Black Stars flopped and ended up surrounding an early goal to the Algerians.

A day he will never forget because it cost him the chance to have replaced the French number at the time at PSG.

“We pitched camp in Marseille. PSG wanted a replacement for Bernard Lama, who was their number one and also the number one for the France national team, so they had considered me,” Damba told Kasapa FM.

“He was on his way to Chelsea and I had heard that all the cameras were following me at training, so that they can go back and make the analysis that in indeed this the goalkeeper they wanted.

“I was supposed to go on a 7-year contract with PSG, so they followed our game against Algeria and they were going to fly me back to France to sign a contract, which was the agreement and look at how things turned out in Algeria,” he asked rhetorically. Abukari Damba is currently a soccer pundit.
