Deputy Minister decries medal decline at Games

Accra, May 16, GNA - Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports has decried the decline in the nation's medal haul at recent International Games.

Team Ghana has experienced a sharp decline in its medal haul at major events and even returned empty from the recent Olympic Games in Beijing last year.

The Deputy Minister told GNA Sports that the circumstances serve a great concern that must be tackled immediately. He said, his outfit has identified solutions to curtailing the menace amongst which includes the identification of talents and the provision of basic infrastructure.

He explained that the talent hunt programme to be implemented in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) will seek to nurture younger athletes to replace ageing ones. "We have realized that, most of our ageing and there are no replacements for them."

The Deputy Minister added that, the selected athletes will be groomed for a period of time and was optimistic that the result will shone.

"The target is not immediate competitions but future Games." He added that, scheme will soon be launched with a committee tasked with its implementation.
