Odododiodioo MP Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has condemned clubs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) which spend huge sums of money bringing in foreign coaches but fail to pay their players.

The former Minister of Sports, who was not enthused about the development, said he could not understand why clubs would be engaging in such a practice while at the national level the government was promoting local content with the appointment of Kwesi Appiah as head coach of the Black Stars.

“It is my worry that in the national team we are looking at having our own, but at the club level they are rather going for expatriates. Why do you go for expatriates when you cannot even pay your players well?” he questioned.

He said he was at a loss over the rationale behind such conduct, disclosing that he was aware of several clubs which have defaulted in the payment of their players’ wages.

“I know clubs that are owing players months of salary, but then they have gone for an expatriate coach. Where are they going to get money to pay such people? It is an irony,” he told Joy FM on Thursday June 15.
