Donkor Foundation tennis clinic ends

A tennis clinic organized by the Donkor Tennis and Educational Foundation (DTEF) with support from the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) ended at the various centres last week.

The clinic was aimed at giving about 100 kids the opportunity to learn the basic rules of the game and also get acquainted with each other.

In an interview with newsmen, the director of the foundation, Isaac Donkor, said his foundation was aiming at developing the talents of kids on the continent through sports and education.

He said the clinic, which is in its fourth year, will in the coming seasons be decentralized and taken to other parts of the country. To begin with, he noted that this year’s clinic will also take place in Kumasi, Takoradi and Obuasi.

He called on stakeholders in sports to help promote and develop the game of tennis in the country, since there were a lot of talented kids he noticed in the clinic.

He said as part of measures to keep the kids active, his foundation is planning to hold some tournaments prior to the main clinic between October and November next year.

Mr. Donkor added that his foundation is currently constructing a tennis academy at Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region which will have four courts – two clay courts and two concrete courts which will house selected talents, train and educate them for their own development.

He mentioned that selected talents will be given scholarships and camped in the academy to develop their talent.

He called on stakeholders in the sporting fraternity to come on board in order to develop the game of tennis in the country. He also appreciated the efforts of the GTA and the National Sports Authority (NSA) in making the programme a success.
